• The Summit 2.0 – Wow! There is so much to say and so much for which we need to thank God – the powerful testimonies, Morgan Jackson’s eye-opening and challenging emphasis upon the power of story as we introduce the Bible to people who have never had one, the praise that ushered us into the very presence of God, the New Missionary workshop and so much more. To me, the most inspiring part of the week was simply to see the students of our church so completely given to worshipping God and engaging in his mission.
• Groundbreaking – It finally happened! It was so great to see the entire church assembled on the parking lot. Since we can’t all fit into the auditorium at the same time we rarely have the opportunity to get a perspective of what God is really doing here. The excitement of the kids who helped turn over the first dirt is contagious and a reminder of why we are doing this. Just as soon as the city gives final approval to the plans, we’ll really see the ground broken up. I am still trying to absorb the amazing news of getting the bids back and finding out that this poor economy is God’s tool to save us two million dollars on this project!
• Youth League – We have been asking God for 600 kids to play and all the necessary workers to make the ministry function. At last count we were well above 500 officially enrolled and well above our numbers from last year. Not only that, the response from so many of you willing to coach, clean, keep score, umpire, etc. has been wonderful. As I have pointed out, this is a great example of what I mean when I say the church is the missionary.
• The K’s – The last night of The Summit we adopted this special group of people as our second “church as the missionary” project following the kids in Youth League. I’ll have more to say about this straight ahead.

Looking back over all God has been doing among us I am struck by a realization that there is a common element responsible – our church is finally, just beginning to learn to pray. Perhaps no single factor has played a greater role in the life of our church over this past year than to see our prayer ministry begin to mature. Tuesday evening prayer ministry has grown from a handful of people (mostly students) in The Point to a more diversified and growing group of people in the auditorium.

I do not aim to put anyone who cannot come to the Tuesday night meeting on a guilt trip. There are often times my schedule prevents me from coming. But, I do believe that what is happening on Tuesday evenings is beginning to spill over in influence toward the creation of a culture of prayer in our church as a whole.

The K’s

If you follow my blog, you have noticed that I often use expressions like K’s or CP’s. I also try to avoid using complete names in such contexts. Some of you have asked me what those letters mean and why I do that.

For years we have trusted God to move our missionary outreach in a more focused direction toward those areas where the church does not exist and where people have never heard the Good News. Now, God has opened the door to work with a very special group of people that I call the K’s. I use such letters and incompleteness in order to respect the security of the people with whom we partner in those parts of the world where words like church and Christian have meanings far different from what you might imagine. These are places where such misunderstanding makes faith in Jesus Christ potentially dangerous. We must be very careful in what we post on the Internet or communicate in any digital form – email, Facebook, MySpace, etc. Not just among this specific group of people, but any area where faith in Christ is a sensitive, restricted or dangerous matter, we have to be cautious. This is why many of the most exciting things going on as fruit of our ministry often cannot be publically communicated.

As we trust God to build an alliance of churches to work with us and Grace Church of Overland Park, we have set our main goal this first year simply to develop a network of extraordinary prayer for the K’s. You’ll be hearing more about that in the weeks ahead. The Men Behind the Wall

Easter and another very special Sunday punctuate the month of April. However, I will take advantage of two Sundays this month to lay the foundation for a new series of studies in the Book of Nehemiah. We often remember Nehemiah for rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem, but that is only a portion of the whole story. The real thrust of Nehemiah is that he was a builder of men. As we progress in our campus expansion, my desire is that we constantly remember that our goal is not a building, but to build men to live Christ-like lives. We have been blessed with many strong men in our church and we will hear from many of them over the months to come as we make our way through Nehemiah’s story.

Setting up this series in March, I preached from 1Chronicles 11 and 12 on David as a builder of men. Thinking back to what we learned from Morgan Jackson during The Summit 2.0, I concluded that morning by pointing to where we are headed in the study of Nehemiah and by challenging you to – enter the story!

• La Cumbre 2.0 – ¡Ea! Hay tanto que decir y tanto que agradecerle a Dios: los testimonios poderosos, el énfasis revelador y desafiante que Morgan Jackson dio al poder tras las historias cuando se introduce la Biblia a un pueblo que nunca la ha conocido, la alabanza que nos hizo llegar a la presencia de Dios, el taller del Nuevo Misionero, y mucho más. Para mí, lo que más me inspiró esa semana fue ver a los estudiantes de nuestra iglesia tan completamente entregados a la adoración a Dios y a la participación en su misión.
• Inicio de obras – ¡Finalmente sucedió! Fue magnífico ver a toda la iglesia congregada en el estacionamiento. Ya que no cabemos todos en el auditorio al mismo tiempo, pocas veces tenemos la oportunidad de obtener una perspectiva de lo que Dios realmente está haciendo aquí. El entusiasmo de los niños que ayudaron a mover la primera tierra es contagioso y nos recuerda por qué estamos haciendo esto. Tan pronto como la ciudad nos otorgue la aprobación final a los planos, realmente veremos el inicio de las excavaciones. Y todavía estoy tratando de asimilar las noticias asombrosas de recibir las licitaciones finales para descubrir que la crisis económica ha sido una herramienta usada por Dios ¡para ahorrarnos dos millones de dólares en este proyecto!
• Liga juvenil de béisbol – Hemos pedido a Dios que nos traiga 600 niños jueguen y suficientes obreros para hacer que este ministerio funcione. Según las últimas cuentas, tenemos bastante más de 500 inscritos oficialmente y más que las cifras del año pasado. No sólo eso, sino que la respuesta de ustedes, dispuestos a ser entrenadores, a la limpieza, a ser anotadores, árbitros, etc. ha sido maravillosa. Como he señalado antes, este es un gran ejemplo de lo que quiero decir cuando digo que la iglesia es el misionero.
• Los K – La última noche de La Cumbre adoptamos a este grupo especial de personas como nuestro segundo proyecto de «la iglesia como misionero», después de la Liga juvenil de béisbol. Hablaré más de esto en breve.

Al dar un vistazo a todo lo que Dios ha hecho entre nosotros, me percato que existe un elemento común que es el responsable de ello: nuestra iglesia finalmente está empezando a aprender a orar. Posiblemente no hay factor que haya desempeñado un papel mayor en la vida de nuestra iglesia en este último año que ver nuestro ministerio de oración empezar a madurar. Nuestro ministerio de oración los martes por la noche ha crecido de un puñado de personas (estudiantes en su mayoría) que se reunían en The Point, a un grupo diverso y creciente de personas que se reúnen en el auditorio.

No me propongo darle sentimientos de culpabilidad a alguien que por alguna razón no le es posible asistir los martes por la noche. Frecuentemente hay veces que mi horario no me permite asistir. Pero sí creo que lo que está sucediendo los martes por las noches está empezando a tener influencia para crear una cultura de oración en nuestra iglesia en general.

Los K

Si usted sigue mi blog, habrá observado que frecuentemente empleo expresiones tales como los K o CP. También evito usar nombres completos en esos contextos. Algunos me han preguntado qué significan esas letras y por qué hago eso.

Por años he confiado que Dios moverá nuestro esfuerzo misionero en un sentido mejor enfocado hacia zonas en las cuales la iglesia no existe y en donde las personas no han escuchado las Buenas Nuevas. Ahora Dios ha abierto la puerta para trabajar con un pueblo muy especial al cual llamo los K. Utilizo letras como esa y datos incompletos para respetar la seguridad de las personas con las cuales nos hemos asociado en aquellas partes del mundo donde palabras tales como iglesia y cristiano tienen significados muy diferentes del que tal vez imagine. Estos son lugares donde tales malos entendidos hacen que tener fe en Jesucristo sea potencialmente peligroso. Tenemos que ser sumamente cuidadosos en lo que publicamos en Internet o lo que comunicamos por medios digitales: email, Facebook, MySpace, etc. No sólo con referencia a este pueblo en particular, sino con referencia a cualquier lugar en donde la fe en Cristo es asunto delicado, restringido o peligroso, tenemos que ejercer cautela. Por esto es que algunas de las cosas más emocionantes que están sucediendo como fruto de nuestro ministerio frecuentemente no pueden comunicarse públicamente.

Mientras confiamos que Dios levantará una alianza de iglesias que colaboren con nosotros y con la Grace Church de Overland Park, nos hemos fijado como meta principal de este primer año el desarrollo de una red de oración extraordinaria por los K. Escuchará más de esto en las semanas próximas. Los hombres tras el muro

El domingo de resurrección y otro domingo muy especial distinguen al mes de abril. Sin embargo, aprovecharé dos domingos de este mes para echar el fundamento de una nueva serie de estudios del libro de Nehemías. Frecuentemente recordamos a Nehemías porque reconstruyó el muro de Jerusalén, pero eso es sólo una parte de la historia. El verdadero empuje de Nehemías es que edificó a hombres. Durante el avance de la expansión de nuestras instalaciones, mi deseo es que recordemos constantemente que nuestra meta no es tener un edificio, sino edificar a hombres que vivan vidas semejantes a la de Cristo. Hemos sido bendecidos con muchos hombres fuertes en nuestra iglesia, y escucharemos de muchos de ellos en los meses venideros, mientras avanzamos por la historia de Nehemías.

Como preparativo para esta serie, en marzo prediqué de 1 Crónicas 11 y 12 sobre David como edificador de hombres. Recordando lo que aprendimos de Morgan Jackson durante La Cumbre 2.0, concluí aquella mañana señalando hacia dónde nos dirigíamos con el estudio de Nehemías y desafiándoles a que entraran en la historia.

Another Day Is Dawning!

Before we know it, another long-awaited day will be upon us. In fact, we have been waiting for this day for about a decade. On Sunday, March 15 we break ground for our campus expansion. What a journey this has been! I can’t begin to express how excited I am about this! The actual groundbreaking will take place between our two morning services, and you can always follow the details here on our newly renovated kcbt.org.

“Wait!” you say, “There’s a recession going on out there.” There sure is! These are tough times and many people are hurting. But, this is also a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The Men Behind the Wall

“So what are we going to study next?” I always hear that question as we finish one series and prepare for another. Actually, we are going to go back and examine a favorite portion of scripture that we studied a decade ago as we first began to talk about the need to expand our campus – Nehemiah.

However, it will be quite a bit different with the perspective of a ten-year journey. As we have said from the beginning, this is not primarily about a new building; this is about building people, making disciples, perfecting the saints, taking the Gospel to the peoples of the world and all that. Nehemiah is often the object of study during a building project because he supervised the building of the walls of Jerusalem following the Babylonian captivity. There are some wonderful lessons to be learned there to be sure! However, what is often overlooked is the fact that building the walls occupies only a relatively small portion of the book. The most important feature of this book is to observe that Nehemiah was a great builder of men. This will be the focus of our study: The Men Behind the Wall.

Nehemiah is a fairly large book and it will take us some time to cover it and do justice to the very important content. To make it interesting, we are going to break it up into several portions. The first segment we will study revolves around the first two chapters of Nehemiah, and I have called this study Choosing Inconvenience. What an appropriate name for what we are getting ready to experience!

After the ceremonial breaking of ground on March 15, there will come a day within the few weeks following that large equipment will appear on our property and most of our parking lot on the north side of 55th street will disappear (we’ll get some of it back after construction). Everything is ready to go and we will only be waiting on the city of Kansas City to do the necessary processing of papers. We do not anticipate any problems, but I am sure you understand that the city must process all the plans, and there is no way to predict how quickly that will happen. When it inevitably does happen, we will wake up to discover overnight that we will all be inconvenienced in some significant way.

I am not fearful of being inconvenienced. In fact, I believe that this is going to be quite healthy and even exciting for all of us. Nehemiah’s example will illustrate biblical truth about choosing inconvenience. Nehemiah intentionally chose to leave a very powerful and comfortable position in Persia in order to return to Jerusalem and be inconvenienced for the sake of the kingdom. On the other side of the temporary inconvenience, Nehemiah emerged a much stronger individual. Not only that, along the way he built an entire generation of men to be strong leaders – The Men Behind the Wall.

Get ready to embrace inconvenience!

¡Otro día alborea!

Antes de que nos percatemos de ello, otro día muy esperado nos llegará. De hecho, hemos estado esperando este día por aproximadamente una década. El domingo 15 de marzo iniciaremos la obra de construcción de la ampliación de nuestras instalaciones. ¡Qué trayecto más largo hemos recorrido! ¡No puedo ni empezar a expresar el entusiasmo que siento al respecto! El inicio de obras tendrá lugar entre nuestros dos servicios matutinos, y siempre podrá enterarse de los detalles en nuestra recién renovada página web www.kcbt.org.

«¡Un momento!», dirá usted, «Estamos en una recesión». ¡Seguro que sí! Esta es una época difícil y muchos están sufriendo. Pero esta también es una oportunidad única. Los hombres tras el muro

«¿Y qué vamos a estudiar después?» Siempre escucho esa pregunta cuando terminamos una serie de estudios y nos preparamos para iniciar otra. En realidad, regresaremos a examinar una de mis porciones favoritas de las Escrituras que estudiamos hace una década, cuando empezamos a hablar de la necesidad de ampliar nuestras instalaciones: Nehemías.

Sin embargo, la perspectiva será bastante diferente luego de nuestro recorrido de diez años. Como dijimos desde un principio, esto no se trata principalmente de tener un edificio nuevo; sino que se trata de edificar a personas, hacer discípulos, perfeccionar a los santos, llevar el evangelio a los pueblos del mundo, y cosas semejantes. Nehemías frecuentemente es tema de estudio durante un proyecto de construcción porque él supervisó la construcción del muro de Jerusalén, luego del cautiverio en Babilonia. ¡Sin duda hay lecciones maravillosas que se pueden aprender! Sin embargo, un hecho que a menudo se pasa por alto es que la edificación del muro ocupa una porción relativamente pequeña del libro. La característica más importante de este libro es observar que Nehemías fue un gran edificador de hombres. Éste será el enfoque de nuestro estudio: Los Hombres tras el Muro.

El Libro de Nehemías es bastante extenso y nos tomará cierto tiempo abarcarlo y hacerle justicia a su contenido tan importante. Para hacerlo más interesante, lo dividiremos en varias porciones. El primer segmento que estudiaremos gira en torno a los primeros dos capítulos de Nehemías, y he titulado este estudio Escogiendo la Incomodidad. ¡Qué nombre más adecuado para lo que estamos a punto de experimentar!

Luego de la ceremonia de inicio de obras el 15 de marzo, en las semanas siguientes llegará el día en el cual equipos pesados aparecerán en nuestra propiedad, y la mayor parte de nuestro estacionamiento en el lado norte de la 55th Street desaparecerá (recuperaremos una parte después de la construcción). Todo está listo para empezar y sólo estamos esperando que el municipio de Kansas City tramite los papeles del caso. No anticipamos tener problemas, pero estoy seguro que usted comprende que el municipio deberá procesar todos los planos y que no hay manera de anticipar la rapidez con la cual eso sucederá. Cuando suceda, despertaremos para descubrir que de la noche a la mañana seremos incomodados de algún modo significativo.

No temo incomodarme. De hecho, creo que esto será una experiencia saludable y hasta alentadora para nosotros. El ejemplo de Nehemías ilustrará las verdades bíblicas en cuanto a escoger incomodarnos. Nehemías intencionadamente escogió dejar un cargo muy poderoso y cómodo en Persia para volver a Jerusalén e incomodarse por el bien del reino. Después de haber salido de su incomodidad temporal, Nehemías emergió como un individuo mucho más fuerte. No sólo eso, sino que en el camino edificó a una generación completa de hombres que fueran líderes fuertes – Los Hombres Tras el Muro.

¡Prepárese a recibir la incomodidad!

The Summit is coming.

Our Student Mission Council prayerfully selected this phrase as the theme for The Summit and I have been trying to develop it fully as we are going through a study of the book of Esther during January and February. As I think about this phrase and our study of Esther, a couple of principles stand out:

• We all have a divine destiny. Despite Esther’s secular, non-practicing Jewish background, God had a purpose for her greater than herself. When the time came, such a time as this, she was ready to embrace God’s purpose for her.
• Providence. This word dominates any analysis of Esther, a book in which God’s name does not appear a single time. Even in those times when we cannot see God or fully understand what he is doing, he is there nonetheless and his providence quietly goes before us, controlling people, events and even kings to provide, protect and prepare us for our mission of destiny.

One month from today The Summit begins. In our normal Sunday morning services on March 1, I will try to prepare our hearts for what is to come. That evening we begin in earnest and services continue through the following Friday night March 6 each evening at 7pm. This will be different. We are asking God to engage our entire church as a missionary. On Friday night I will challenge us to commit to pray for the Kurdish people and specifically to pray about how God would use us to be a channel of his love to them.

I invite you to join us on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings for a brief course on making disciples in our contemporary world. On Thursday morning I will meet with any visiting pastors and leaders and discuss forming an alliance of churches to reach the Kurds. We are anticipating a good number of our Latin American friends to be with us and the goal of this alliance is specifically to unite efforts between English speaking and Spanish speaking churches to make a difference in our world. For years through Live the Great Commission, I have been challenging Latin American churches to engage in mission to other languages and cultures. It has been a long, and at times a lonely road. I can’t help but think, though, that all of this effort has been guided by God’s providence for such a time as this. Saturday morning is a workshop to introduce people to the “new missionary” by having several of the new missionaries share their lives with us as to how God is blessing those who think creatively. On March 8, Dr. Paul Nyquist of Avant Ministries will challenge us to follow through with what we will have experienced during the week. Be sure to check out www.thenewmissionary.com.

Ground-breaking is coming. For years we have been praying, planning and preparing for such a time as this. It’s almost here! Just the other day I saw some of the final artistic conceptions of what this is going to look like. Wow! I knew it would be good, but I have to say that what I saw was very encouraging.  Not only am I thrilled to think what this means for our Children’s Ministry, I am also encouraged to think that we have some gifted men in our church who will now have some space to utilize their gifts in adult education as space in our current facility becomes available. I don’t think we yet fully understand just how much this is going to impact our ministry and outreach and it has come for such a time as this.

Youth League is coming. This year we are asking God for at least 600 youth to participate in our youth league. Maybe this is your destiny – to be used of God to touch the life of a child who one day will be mightily used of God for a destiny of his or her own. I am continually amazed at how God uses athletics to touch lives. Just last month we sent our third baseball team to the Dominican Republic to build relationships, make disciples, touch lives and weave networks of people whom God has brought together for such a time as this.

Finally. I hope you see how this all connects – for such a time as this. The Summit, ground-breaking for the campus expansion, youth league, missions and missionaries – it’s all about making disciples of Jesus Christ among all the peoples of the world, beginning right here in Kansas City and extending even to the often forgotten and oppressed Kurdish people on the other side of the globe. It’s destiny, our destiny – for such a time as this.

• Todos tenemos un destino divino. A pesar del fondo secular y judío no practicante que Ester tenía, Dios tenía un propósito para ella que iba más allá de su persona. Cuando llegó aquel momento, esta hora, ella estaba lista para abrazar el propósito que Dios tenía para ella.
• Providencia. Esta palabra domina todo análisis de Ester, un libro en el cual el nombre de Dios no se menciona ni una sola vez. Aun en los momentos en los cuales no podemos ver a Dios ni comprender plenamente lo que está haciendo, él está allí de igual modo, y su providencia va calladamente delante de nosotros, controlando a personas, eventos y aun a reyes para proveer, proteger y prepararnos para nuestra misión de destino.

En un mes a partir de hoy se inicia La Cumbre. En nuestros servicios normales de la mañana del domingos 1 de marzo, procuraré preparar nuestros corazones para lo que vendrá. Esa noche iniciaremos de lleno y los servicios continuarán hasta el viernes 6 de marzo, cada noche a las 7:00 pm. Esto será algo diferente. Estamos pidiéndole a Dios que use a toda nuestra iglesia como misionera. La noche del viernes desafiaré a nuestra congregación a comprometerse a orar por el pueblo kurdo y específicamente a orar que Dios nos use como canal para transmitir el amor de Dios a ellos.

Les invito a que nos acompañen las mañanas del martes y del miércoles para un curso breve sobre cómo hacer discípulos en nuestro mundo contemporáneo. El jueves por la mañana me reuniré con los pastores y líderes que nos visitan para discutir la formación de una alianza de iglesias dedicada a alcanzar a los kurdos. Anticipamos la llegada de un buen número de amigos de América Latina, y la meta de esta alianza será específicamente aunar esfuerzos entre iglesias de habla inglesa e hispana para marcar una diferencia positiva en nuestro mundo. Por años, a través de Vive la Gran Comisión, he desafiado a iglesias latinoamericanas a involucrarse en misiones a pueblos de otros idiomas y culturas. Este camino ha sido largo, y algunas veces solitario. No obstante, no puedo dejar de pensar que este esfuerzo ha sido guiado por la providencia divina para esta hora. El sábado por la mañana celebraremos un taller para presentar a personas al «nuevo misionero», por medio de pedir a varios de nuestros nuevos misioneros que compartan sus vidas con nosotros y nos muestren cómo Dios bendice a aquellos que piensan de modo creativo. Opino que aún no comprendemos plenamente cuánto impactará esto a nuestro ministerio y alcance, y ha llegado para esta hora.

La Liga Juvenil de Béisbol se acerca. Este año estamos pidiéndole a Dios que por lo menos 600 jóvenes y niños participen en nuestra liga juvenil. Tal vez este es su destino: ser usado por Dios para tocar la vida de un niño que un día será usado poderosamente por Dios para cumplir su propio destino. Continuamente me siento asombrado al ver cómo Dios emplea actividades atléticas para tocar vidas. Apenas el mes pasado enviamos nuestro tercer equipo de béisbol a la República Dominicana para edificar relaciones, hacer discípulos, tocar vidas y forjar redes de personas que Dios ha unido para esta hora.

Finalmente, espero que pueda ver cómo todo esto está conectado, para esta hora. La Cumbre, la expansión de nuestras instalaciones, la liga juvenil, las misiones y los misioneros; todo tiene que ver con hacer discípulos de Jesucristo entre todos los pueblos del mundo, empezando aquí mismo en Kansas City y extendiéndose hasta el pueblo kurdo, frecuentemente olvidado y oprimido, en el otro lado del planeta. Su destino, nuestro destino, para esta hora.

Nuestro enfoque futuro – Para esta hora

Previamente durante este año, nuestro Consejo Misionero Estudiantil, luego de mucha oración, presentó esta frase de Ester como el tema para La Cumbre, nuestra conferencia misionera que se desarrollará del domingo 1 al domingo 6 de marzo. Les habíamos encargado la misión de planificar La Cumbre con el enfoque afilado de involucrar a las generaciones jóvenes en la misión divina y de unir a toda la iglesia, jóvenes y ancianos, alrededor de una comisión común.

¡Nuestro pastor de misiones, Jay Grimwood, y yo estamos sumamente entusiasmados con La Cumbre! La frescura y creatividad que nuestros estudiantes han traído a la tarea son inspiradoras. Los servicios principales de adoración durante la conferencia abarcarán desde la noche del domingo 1 de marzo hasta el viernes 6 de marzo. Los servicios matutinos de los domingos 1 y 8 de marzo servirán para presentar y concluir este tiempo sumamente especial en la vida de nuestra iglesia. Una cosa seguirá siendo igual entre esta conferencia y las pasadas: será un tiempo para informarnos de lo que Dios está haciendo en el mundo y para hacer un llamado a involucrarnos y marcar una diferencia ahora. En las mañanas del martes y del miércoles de La Cumbre, enseñaré un estudio general sobre cómo hacer discípulos en el mundo de hoy y cómo usar el estudio de Direcciones. Cualquiera puede inscribirse para asistir a estas sesiones matutinas. En la mañana del jueves de esa semana haremos una presentación especial dirigida a todos los pastores y líderes presentes (y todos están invitados a asistir) para invitarles a formar una alianza de iglesias en los Estados Unidos y Latinoamérica con el propósito específico de llevar las buenas nuevas de Jesucristo al pueblo kurdo, en donde se encuentre en el mundo. De paso, si tiene curiosidad sobre quiénes son los kurdos, no sólo se encuentran principalmente en cinco países hoy (son el grupo más numeroso de personas del mundo que carece de país propio), ¡sino que también aparecen en la Biblia! Esto tal vez le sorprenderá, pero todo es para esta hora.

El sábado por la mañana desarrollaremos un taller sobre «El Nuevo Misionero». Varios conferencistas especiales compartirán con nosotros.

Esto es lo que le pido que haga:

• Ore con nosotros para que Dios prepare nuestros corazones y nos hable durante La Cumbre. Si está disponible los martes a las 7:00 de la noche, únase a nosotros en nuestras reuniones de oración como preparativo magnífico para esta importante conferencia.
• Planee estar con nosotros todo el tiempo que pueda durante las noches del 1 al 6 de marzo. Esta semana es crítica para nuestra visión del futuro y para que hallemos el lugar que Dios tiene para nosotros en su misión. Le prometo que todo inconveniente, esfuerzo o sacrificio por asistir valdrá la pena.
• Considere aprovechar las demás actividades especiales durante las horas del día, de martes a jueves, y el sábado.
• Únase a nosotros y ayúdenos con algunas de las muchas tareas que será necesario llevar a cabo para que La Cumbre sea posible: estacionamiento, cuidado de niños, servicio de alimentos, alojamiento para nuestros invitados de fuera de la ciudad y muchas otras necesidades.

El fin del año y el inicio del año nuevo siempre son momentos de reflexión. Personalmente, este es un tiempo importante para mí porque repaso las lecciones aprendidas durante el último año y reflexiono sobre lo que Dios quiere hacer en mi vida y a través de mí en el año por venir. Tal vez éste es el año para el cual nací, para esta hora. Esta frase del libro de Ester es un gran estímulo a la reflexión mientras evaluamos cuidadosamente y en oración nuestro crecimiento y desarrollo en el año por venir.

Con estos pensamientos en mente y como preparativo para La Cumbre, a partir del primer domingo de enero, estaré predicando del Libro de Ester: Para Esta Hora. Ester es un libro fascinante, rodeado de controversia y lleno de lecciones de vida relevantes Para Esta Hora.

Medite sobre esta frase famosa. Hay muchas cosas sucediendo en nuestra iglesia ahora Para Esta Hora.

• Ser padre de sus hijos es algo que no puede postergarse – es Para Esta Hora. Aproveche nuestro Banquete Anual para Padres/Hijas como una oportunidad para crear recuerdos de por vida para su hija.
• Ministrar a los niños a través de los deportes es un método asombrosamente eficaz de moldear sus vidas, Para Esta Hora. Our future focus – for such a time as this

Earlier this year, our Student Mission Council prayerfully submitted this phrase from Esther as the theme for The Summit, our mission conference that will spread from Sunday to Sunday, March 1-8. We had tasked them with the mission of planning The Summit with a razor-sharp focus on engaging today’s younger generations in God’s mission while bringing together the entire church, young and old alike, together around our common commission.

Pastor Jay Grimwood, our mission pastor, and I are very excited about The Summit! The freshness and creativity that our students have brought to the task is inspiring. The main worship services during the conference will be from Sunday evening, March 1 through Friday evening, March 6. Sunday morning services on March 1 and 8 will introduce and conclude this very important time in our church life. What will be the same about this conference from those in the past – a time to inform about what God is doing in the world and a call to get involved and be part of making a difference now. What will be different about this conference – just about everything else!

On Tuesday and Wednesday mornings of The Summit I will be teaching an overview of making disciples in today’s world and use of the Directions study. Anyone can register to attend these morning sessions. On Thursday morning that week we are going to make a special presentation to all pastors and leaders present (any of you are welcome to come) to form an alliance of churches in the United States and Latin America to specifically take the good news of Jesus Christ to the Kurdish people wherever they may be found in the world. By the way, if you are curious as to who the Kurds are, not only are they found principally in five countries today (they are the largest group of people in the world without a homeland of their own), they are also found in the Bible! You might be surprised, but it is all for such a time as this.

On Saturday morning there will be a workshop on “The New Missionary.” Several special speakers will share with us.

Here is what I am asking you to do:

• Pray with us that God would prepare our hearts and speak to all of us during The Summit. If you are available on Tuesday evenings at 7:00pm, you can join us for our prayer ministry as a great place to join together in prayer for this important conference.
• Make plans to be with us as much as possible each evening from March 1 – 6. This week is critical to our vision for the future and each of us finding God’s place for us in his mission. I promise you that it will be worth whatever inconvenience, effort or sacrifice to be there.
• Consider taking advantage of the other special activities during the day, Tuesday through Thursday and Saturday.
• Join up and help us with some of the many tasks that will be necessary to make The Summit possible – parking, child care, food service, lodging for out-of-town guests, and many other needs.

Our present focus – for such a time as this

The end of the year and beginning of the new year is always a time for reflection. Personally, this is an important time for me as I review lessons learned over the past year and reflect on what God wants to do in and through my life in the year ahead. Just maybe this is the year for which I was born – for such a time as this. This phrase from Esther is a great thought stimulator as we carefully and prayerfully consider our spiritual growth and development in the year ahead.

With these thoughts in mind, and in preparation for The Summit, beginning the first Sunday of January, I will be preaching through the Book of Esther – For Such a Time As This. Esther is a fascinating book, surrounded by controversy and filled with relevant life lessons For Such a Time as This!

Meditate on this famous phrase. We have many things happening in our church right now For Such a Time as This:

• Being a parent to your children is not something that can be put off – it’s For Such a Time as This. Take advantage of our annual Father/Daughter Banquet as an opportunity to build memories for life with your daughter.
• Working with kids in sports is an amazingly effective way to mold their lives – For Such a Time as This. The final Sunday of January has been set aside to confirm our commitment to our athletic ministries and challenge as many of you as possible to get involved – For Such a Time as This.
• Finally, it’s not too early to be thinking and praying for a day that will mark a milestone in our church history as we break ground for our campus expansion on March 15. For years we have been in planning and preparation – For Such a Time as This.

A continuación tuvimos una discusión sobre cómo es que la Navidad es en realidad un símbolo y que ciertamente no es el día preciso del nacimiento de Jesús. Aun si fuera su fecha verdadera de nacimiento, el día en sí no es santo ni especial, sino que tiene el propósito de enfocar nuestros pensamientos en Jesús, nuestro Salvador. Él es santo y especial. Continuamos hablando acerca de cómo los cristianos no celebraron el nacimiento de Jesús por los primeros dos siglos de nuestra era. La referencia más antigua al 25 de diciembre como celebración del nacimiento de Jesús data del año 345 d.C. Muchos opinan que los seguidores de Jesús empezaron a celebrar el nacimiento de Jesús el 25 de diciembre como respuesta a las fiestas romanas del solsticio de invierno, las cuales incluían bastante libertinaje. Hoy ciertamente tenemos nuestros problemas. ¿Cómo podemos aprovechar la creatividad que Dios nos ha concedido como don para enfrentar los desafíos de la actualidad? Muchos se quejan de los problemas económicos de hoy y vaticinan que las ventas en la época de navidades serán mucho menores que lo usual y que esto tendrá consecuencias difíciles para los comerciantes. Otros han perdido su empleo o sufren otros efectos de la crisis actual. Esta es mi sugerencia: En lugar de hacer que la Navidad tenga que ver con el juguete más reciente de moda, ¿por qué no ser creativos y abandonar ese enfoque materialista?

• ¿Tiene escasez de dinero? ¿Por qué no darle a su familia una nueva tradición navideña? Hace unos cuantos años atrás, mi hija menor decidió que ella y yo empezaríamos una tradición de preparar ponche navideño juntos un par de días antes de la Navidad. Hemos estado haciéndolo desde entonces y esperamos ese momento con mucha anticipación.
• Déle a sus hijos regalos con valor incalculable, pero que cuestan poco dinero. ¿Qué le parece el regalo de prometerle que asistirá a todos los eventos deportivos o programas escolares del año próximo? (¡No lo prometa si no puede cumplirlo!) O prometa que hará algo especial con ellos de modo regular. Cuando mis hijas eran pequeñas, yo las llevaba a una «cita con Papi» en un hotel a desayunar.
• ¿Qué le parece un regalo creativo para sus amigos? ¿Qué cosas sabe hacer bien? ¿Por qué no hace eso para un amigo o amiga? Un corte de cabello, una reparación en el hogar, repararle un auto, etc.
• El 15 de marzo iniciaremos la obra de expansión de nuestras instalaciones. Muchos nos hemos comprometido a dar regularmente, por encima de nuestros diezmos y ofrendas regulares, para posibilitar esta obra. Tal vez el regalo que puede ofrecerle al Señor (y a usted mismo) esta Navidad es sencillamente ser fiel en sus ofrendas regulares. Si todos hiciéramos eso, ¡terminaríamos esta expansión de instalaciones en buena forma! ¿No tiene mucho dinero? ¿Qué tal si le da su tiempo a Dios a través de la iglesia? Cuando se inicie la construcción, necesitaremos aumentar la cantidad de conductores de autobuses, encargados del estacionamiento y equipos de hospitalidad para manejar la construcción.
• ¿Qué le parece si su familia hace una contribución a la ofrenda navideña de benevolencia? Conozco a familias que han decidido no darse regalos unos a otros por un tiempo con el propósito de darle a otros. ¡Qué forma más creativa de manifestar el espíritu navideño!
• ¿Qué tal si usted con su familia llevan a cabo un proyecto de servicio navideño? Algunas familias tienen la tradición de servir juntos en City Union Mission, o en algún ministerio similar durante las pascuas.

Hablando de creatividad, aquí hay unos cuantos ejemplos adicionales de personas que han puesto su creatividad a trabajar en la iglesia:

• El domingo 21 de diciembre disfrutaremos de un programa navideño muy especial en nuestros dos servicios matutinos. Este evento especial tendrá la participación de tanto niños como adultos. ¡No se lo pierda!

• ¡Asegúrese de marcar el 1 al 6 marzo en su calendario! ¿Quiere hablar de creatividad? Nuestro consejo misionero estudiantil está encargado de planificar La Cumbre y no tengo palabras suficientes para decirles lo entusiasmado que me siento sobre cómo todo esto está avanzando. What ensued was a discussion about Christmas being a symbol and almost certainly not the very day of Jesus’ birth. Even if it was the actual birthday of Jesus, it is not the day that is holy and special, but rather it is meant to focus our thoughts on Jesus our Savior. He is the one who is holy and special. We went on to talk about how no Christians celebrated the birthday of Jesus in the first couple of centuries. The earliest known reference to December 25 as the celebration of Jesus’ birth is from 354AD. Many think that followers of Jesus began to celebrate December 25 as Christ’s birthday as a response to Roman celebrations of the winter solstice that involved a great deal of debauchery. Sure, many of our Christmas traditions find their origin in various religious and cultural traditions going back even before Jesus’ birth, but could it be that the very concept of setting aside a day to celebrate Christ’s birth was the creative response of early believers to a societal problem in the Roman Empire?

We sure have some problems today, don’t we! How can we use the creativity with which God has gifted us to face our current challenges? Many bemoan the current economic problems and predict that Christmas sales will be far lower than usual and have dire consequences for retailers. Some have lost jobs or are suffering from other effects of the current crisis. Here’s my suggestion: instead of making Christmas all about the latest gadget, why not get creative and lose the materialistic focus?

• Short on cash? Why not give the family a new Christmas tradition? A few years ago, my youngest daughter decided that she and I should begin a tradition of making eggnog together a couple of days before Christmas. We have been doing it ever since and look forward to it greatly.
• Give your kids gifts that are invaluable, yet cost little money. How about the gift of promising to attend all their sports events or school programs next year? (Don’t promise if you can’t follow through!). Or, promise to do something special on a regular basis. When my girls were little I would take them on a “date with daddy” to a hotel for breakfast.
• What about a creative gift for friends? What is it that you do well? Why not do that for a friend? A new hair style, a home repair, a car repair, etc.
• On March 15 we are breaking ground for our campus expansion. Many of us have committed to giving regularly above our tithes and offerings to make this possible. Maybe your gift to God (and yourself!) this Christmas would be simply to be faithful in your regular giving. If we would all do that, we could complete this campus expansion in great shape! Strapped for cash? How about giving your time to God through the church? As we begin construction, we are going to need to increase greatly our shuttle bus drivers, parking lot attendants and hospitality team as we navigate through the construction.
• How about the family making a contribution to the Christmas benevolence offering? I’ve known families who have decided to forego gifts to each other for a season in order to give to others. What great creativity in the spirit of Christmas!
• What about giving a Christmas service project as a family? Some families have a tradition of serving together at City Union Mission or a similar ministry over the holidays.

Speaking of creativity, here are a few more examples of people putting their creativity to work in the church:

• On Sunday December 21 we will be treated to a very special Christmas program in both morning services. This special seasonal event will involve both adults and children and is something you won’t want to miss.
• On Christmas Eve at 5:00PM we will continue our recently added tradition of a short, but meaningful Christmas Eve Service. Whatever your family traditions, this Christmas Eve Service is a wonderful way to put the correct focus on Christmas.
• Make sure that March 1-6 is on your calendar! You want to talk creativity? Our student mission council is in charge of planning The Summit, and I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am about the way this is all coming together. The theme is “For a Time Such as This,” from the Book of Esther.

In preparation for The Summit I am going to be preaching through Esther beginning in January and leading up to The Summit.
